About Protect PDF
Add password protection to any PDF document to prevent unauthorised access. Once protected, the PDF requires the password to open. This tool is currently being integrated with a WASM-based PDF encryption module for fully local, browser-side processing. In the meantime, you can password-protect PDFs using your operating system's built-in print dialog: File → Print → PDF → Save as PDF → Security Options. Your document never needs to leave your device using either approach.
Frequently Asked Questions
What encryption does this use?
PDF password protection uses AES-256 encryption per the PDF 1.7 standard, the industry standard for PDF security.
Can I set permissions like print-only or no-copy?
Standard PDF encryption supports owner vs user passwords. Owner password unlocks full editing rights; user password restricts to view-only or print-only access.
Is full browser-based encryption available yet?
Not yet — it is coming in an upcoming update. The WASM encryption module is currently being integrated.
How do I protect a PDF today?
Use your OS print dialog: File → Print → Save as PDF → Security Options to add a password without uploading your file anywhere.
