About GIF Optimizer

Reduce the file size of animated GIF files using advanced palette optimisation — directly in your browser with no upload required. Oversized GIFs slow down web pages, consume bandwidth, and often exceed file size limits on social platforms and messaging apps. This tool uses FFmpeg WASM to regenerate the GIF with an optimised colour palette (using the palettegen/paletteuse two-pass method), reducing file size by 30–70% while preserving visual quality. Three quality levels are available: Low (smallest file, fewer colours), Medium (balanced), and High (best quality, closest to original). Processing is entirely local.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can a GIF be reduced?

Typically 30–70% depending on the original palette efficiency. GIFs with many similar frames or redundant colours see the biggest reductions.

Will the animation speed change?

On Low quality the FPS may be reduced slightly to cut file size. On Medium and High, the original frame timing is preserved.

Should I use GIF or MP4?

MP4 is far more efficient (90%+ smaller) and should be preferred for web. Use GIF Optimizer when you specifically need a GIF format.

Are files uploaded?

No. Optimisation runs locally using FFmpeg WebAssembly in your browser.
