Why are GIFs so large?
GIF is an inefficient format for video. A 5-second video clip can produce a 10-20 MB GIF. Reduce FPS and width to keep file sizes manageable.
What FPS should I use?
10 FPS for simple animations, 15 FPS for smooth motion, 24 FPS for near-video quality (but much larger files).
How can I make the GIF smaller?
Reduce the width (320px is common for web GIFs), lower the FPS to 10, and trim the video to the shortest clip possible before converting.
Why are GIFs larger than MP4 videos?
GIF uses an old LZW compression algorithm that is far less efficient than H.264 video compression. A 5-second MP4 might be 1MB; the same content as a GIF is typically 10–30MB.
What FPS should I use for GIFs?
10–15 FPS gives smooth animation for most content. 24 FPS is "cinematic" but produces much larger files. For reaction GIFs, 10 FPS is usually enough.
What width should I use?
For social media sharing: 400–640px wide is ideal. For messaging apps like Slack, Discord, iMessage: 320–480px. Wider GIFs become very large.
Why does my GIF look washed out?
